Artificial Turf Standards - Drainage Issues
It has been announced that the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) is proposing a new ASTM standard for artificial turf that will confront drainage issues.
Drainage failures are one of the major problems confronting owners and operators of synthetic turf sports fields. A proposed new standard that will test for vertical permeability of artificial grass will be useful to contractors, testing agencies and designers in reducing or mitigating problems related to drainage of fields and other artificial turf applications.
The proposed new standard, WK22081, tests methods for vertical permeability of artificial turf sports field's base stone and systems by the Container Flood Test Method. Experts believe this will be a more accurate and effective means of dealing with potential drainage issues that the methods currently in use. To note, this new standard (WK22081) is being developed by the Subcommittee F08.65 on Artificial Turf Surfaces and Systems.
The benefits of this method are that no special testing equipment is required, testing can be performed both before and after the installation and the testing more closely resembles real-life rainwater conditions.
